fratres Carthaginenses, qui pro finium suorum propagationae se vivos sepeliri sustinuerunt. Nam cum, inter Carthaginienses et Cyrenenses, de finibus controversia in cidisset, placuit, ut certô tempore duo viri ex utraque civitate egrederentur, et ubicumque sibi obvii fierent, ibi utriusque ditionis termini essent. Itaque Carthagine egressi Philaeni, cum aliquot passuum milia in fines Cyrenensium processissent, indignati adversarii se esse praeventos, optionem Philaenis proposuerunt, malleutne ad fines suos retrocedere, an eo in loco vivi defodi: illisque respondentibus, se patriae salutem vitae anteferre, a Cyrenensibus, qui viribus superiores erant, vivi ibidem sunt defossi. Quô in locô Carthaginienses, ne eximia illorum in patriam pietas ullâ temporum iniuriâ obliteraletur, duas illic aras constituerunt, quas a fratrum horum nomine, Philenorum ar as, vocaverunt.
